BILL HELIN'S FIRST SOLO AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR BOOK SERIES

Published by Strong Nations Publishers in Nanaimo B.C. Mr. Helin's 8 book series focuses on his late Grandmothers Tlingit roots in Southern Alaska.

Granny Maude Helin married Tsimshian Chief Henry Helin who was a fisherman from Port Essington and gave birth to Bill's Father Art Hyemass Helin from the Gitlan tribe of the Tsimshian Nation.

"This project was a wonderful project that my publisher Terry Mack asked me to write and illustrate. It was a creative cultural journey for me that revealed a banquet of new stories and information that I had not yet explored.

My Granny was the main storyteller and teacher of our Tsimshian/Tlingit roots , throughout my childhood. Her memory and spirit has inspired and guided me throughout my career as a cultural artist. She would be proud of what we are doing to educate our children." Bill Helin

DIGITAL OR PAPER? What is this world coming to? Will we stop buying paper books all together someday? I don`t think we will ever get rid of the traditional paper books totally, even though so many people are reading E books and i-books or news papers on their computers.

Many publishers and book experts agree that people still like to hang on to a book and not be worried that their batteries will die on the rechargeable devices, or that the power outage will make all their cloud stored files disappear. It has happened and scientists and space experts all agree that it will happen in the future, those satellites do blow up or break down in space, so hang on to your paper book collection so can cozy up to the fire or candle light.

ARE WE LOSING TOUCH? IS WRITING ON PAPER IMPORTANT? ARE CHILDREN LAZIER AND MORE DISFUNCTIONAL BECAUSE OF TOO MUCH GAME PLAYING AND MOVIE WATCHING? WHO IS IN CHARGE NOW ANYWAYS?

NOT PARENTS, WHICH IS MOSTLY WOMEN RAISING THE KIDS, WHILE MEN ARE OUT WORKING AND STARTING NEW BUSINESSES AND FAMILIES. WHAT A MESS MEN AND THEIR EGOES CAN MAKE!

STAY STRONG LADIES, KEEP TEACHING AND KEEP SETTING THE BETTER EXAMPLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN. BY TSIMSHIAN TRADITION THE LADIES USED TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT FOUNDATION TO THE GOVERNING SYSTEM, UNTIL THE TRADE AND RELIGION FROM EUROPE CAME AND ABOLISHED THE MATRIARCH WISDOM AND PROTECTION OF FUTURE GENERATIONS.

FORTUNATELY WOMEN ARE STILL FIGHTING FOR THEIR CHILDREN, MOST OF THEM ANYWAYS. COULD YOU IMAGINE THE MESS OUR COUNTRY WOULD BE IN IF WOMEN WERE`NT TEACHING AND LOVING THEIR KIDS?

STRONG NATIONS GUIDED READING SERIES- SAMPLE IMAGES OF PHASE TWO

These Guided Reading books are for schools only and can be viewed and purchased through Pearsen's Publishing

Bill Helin illustrated 16 more books for Strong Nations in phase two of their dynamic early readers books, levels 11-20. This series has been printed in a larger format, 9x6".

"We decided to make this series larger because the teachers requested it to us, they also requested other topics which we will be bringing out in Phase 3. We have also started the Cultural Author Series where I will be illustrating books written by Aboriginal Authors from across Canada and the U.S.A. The first series I`m working on is written by Inuit author Michael Kusugak, which I have been enjoying from the first in person meeting with Michael. He is a wonderful person and has written some beautiful books."

  RAVEN STEALS THE SHOW
There are many stories up and down the coast of B.C. from First Nations communities, about the tricky Raven, most of them say that he is a trickster, a thief and a mysterious scavenger. Most can`t tell the difference between a Raven and a crow let alone know the Aboriginal stories told about them.
THIS BOOK CAN BE PURCHASED AS A SIGNED ORIGINAL BOOK BY BILL HELIN IN A LOW RUN EDITION FOR $75.
My Tsimshian ancestors passed on the stories about this white Raven called Txamsm(Samsum), who could transform himself into a human like warrior, or so he pretended to be. He would travel around from village to village tricking, or trying to trick them into giving him food of any kind. Sounds like one of my friends actually.
This human state came much later than the earlier stories befoe Raven invented or created humans, mostly out of being bored with what he had already created on earth. In any case the Raven I speak of in my stories has a pretty fun and challenging journey  that teaches some lessons about life and survival.
I hope you enjoy our stories, please share one of yours from your families history, maybe someday we can make a book out of it.
Creatively enjoying life.                                            Bill Helin/Welaaxum Yout
